BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – No one was injured as a Battle Creek Police cadet disarmed a five-year-old child holding a loaded handgun while serving a subpoena on Inn Road Saturday.
According to the Battle Creek Police Department, the cadet called for a road patrol officer after the child initially answered the door with a large kitchen knife. When the cadet asked the child to have an adult come to the door, the child returned with the loaded handgun, which the cadet removed.
Once road patrol officers arrived, two adult males and one adult female were found inside the home. They were detained and taken to the police department for questioning.
Police say due to the handgun and the deplorable condition of the home, five children ranging from 8 years old to 6 months old were turned over to Child Protective Services.
Lifecare Ambulance transported one of the children to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and then later to a hospital in Kalamazoo due to health concerns.
